This journal article addresses the role played by emotions in a student’s learning process as evidenced by research in neuroscience and psychology. Recent studies in a field known to academics as MBE (Mind, Brain, and Education) evidence a need for learning that is grounded in the teachings of neuroscience and that will in turn optimize the cognitive process and lead towards an improved educational experience. Similarly, this study analyzes the power of positive and negative emotions, as well as the effectiveness of emotional self-regulation in fostering ideal learning environments. We recommend the involvement of teachers in the development of more effective teaching strategies that consider these variables, address students’ different states of emotions, and promote their intrinsic motivation. In order to do this, a series of measures are proposed to improve student’s motivation in a teaching environment.
